With the ever-growing evidence base linking environmental design to public health, she welcomes the day when creating healthy buildings is the baseline for good design. Georgia is a strong believer that everyone deserves to work and live in buildings that positively impact their health. But after learning more about the research linking these gardens to improved physical, mental, and social health and seeing the successful implementation, such as the Boston Medical Center’s rooftop garden, she is a newly converted advocate of this strategy and incredibly excited about the potential of these spaces to affect occupant health! She notes that in the beginning she was cautious about the strategy relating to Fruit and Vegetable Gardens. Georgia has a better understanding of the relationship between building design and health since becoming a Fitwel Ambassador. Through the process of certifying the Dakota Building, Georgia gained a better understanding of the rigorous 3 rd-party certification process and how to retrofit existing buildings to comply with Fitwel. She was the project lead for RO Real Estate’s Dakota Building, the first multi-tenant building to be Fitwel Certified in Europe. Georgia also has significant knowledge of applying Fitwel to projects and of the certification process. Over the last 18 months, she has given more than 50 seminars to architects, engineers, and property managers. She began reaching out to industry professionals and offering to provide seminars focusing on building design and occupant health, including an introduction to the Fitwel Certification System. With an understanding that the properties we live and work have a significant impact on our mental and physical health, Georgia saw the need to educate her peers and colleagues in the UK. She views certifications like Fitwel as a way to elevate the social aspect of sustainability and drive change in the market. After hearing about the Fitwel Certification System in 2016, she was keen to find out more and get involved.
